Russia Hopeful for Peaceful Resolution in Armenia's Situation, Matvienko Discusses with Mirzoyan
The Chair of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matvienko, has discussed the current situation in Armenia with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ararat Mirzoyan. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
Matvienko expressed that Russia is hopeful for a peaceful resolution of the situation. The two sides also addressed the issue of the return of Armenian prisoners of war and other captives held in Azerbaijan to their homeland. Specifically, they referred to a letter sent a few days ago by women parliamentarians from Armenia to Valentina Matvienko, in which the MPs requested assistance in the return of the women who were captured.
It is noteworthy that the Armenian armed forces have issued a statement demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and the government, while warning against using force against the people, whose children have died protecting the Homeland and Artsakh. Following this announcement, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a post on his Facebook page, inviting his supporters to Republic Square, while labeling the General Staff's statement as an 'attempt at a military coup.'
Opposition members have set up tents in front of the National Assembly building and plan to remain there until the Prime Minister resigns.
