Russian Federation Council Comments on Situation in Armenia

The situation in Armenia is raising significant concerns, as any revolutionary changes exacerbate the political climate in countries that are considered friends of Russia. This was stated by Sergey Tsekov, a member of the International Committee of the Federation Council, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

On Thursday, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and warned him against using force against his people. Following this demand, Pashinyan announced the dismissal of Chief of the General Staff Onik Gasparyan.

The day prior, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian had dismissed the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Tiran Khachatryan, at Pashinyan's recommendation, who was reportedly mocking the Prime Minister's comments about the “Iskander” missile systems.

“Personally, I find the situation in Armenia very troubling, as any revolutionary-type crisis is detrimental to such friendly countries,” the parliamentarian stated. He expressed hope that “the parties will be able to reach an agreement, and everything will pass peacefully.”
