Maria Zakharova Surprised by Sale of Armenian Churches in Turkey
During a press briefing, Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed a question from a Public Television journalist regarding the sale of two Armenian churches in Turkey. The journalist highlighted the alarming trend of destruction of monuments and cultural sites in the region, asking whether such acts could undermine the prospects for peace and stability.
Zakharova responded, "I cannot comment on the sale of real estate properties; however, I too have found it surprising at times that there is a practice of selling cultural objects around the world. There are instances where cultural objects are transformed into apartments, shopping centers, or even nightclubs. In this case, it pertains to the domestic national legislation of each country, and we must consider that. As for the destruction of religious objects and historical monuments, it is essential to understand what specifically is being referred to. Nevertheless, you are well aware of our position that there should be care and respect for religious objects and historical monuments."
