Biden Administration Considers China the 'Greatest Long-Term Threat to U.S. National Security'

President Biden's Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan believe that China poses the "greatest threat to U.S. national security." This was stated by Republican Congressman Michael McCaul in an interview with Fox News after speaking with officials, noting that they will take a "different approach" to China than the Trump administration.

In his capacity as the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, McCaul mentioned that during their discussions, Blinken and Sullivan indicated that, "in their opinion, China represents the greatest long-term threat to U.S. national security." Earlier this month, in an interview with MSNBC, Blinken stated that there is "no doubt that China is the most serious challenge" for the U.S., emphasizing that the Biden administration should approach China from a "position of strength, not weakness."

During the Trump administration, senior officials warned about the threat posed by China to the U.S. In December, former National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe also stated that China is "our greatest national security threat" across several issues, including military, economic, technological, cyber, and 5G telecommunications.

McCaul expressed concern that the Biden administration wants to be "more accommodating towards China," pointing to Biden's decision to return to the Paris climate agreement. He explained, "I worry that they may take a softer stance towards China to extract certain concessions from them when it comes to the Paris climate agreement. I believe, however, this would weaken our foreign policy stance against the Communist Party of China."

"Trump was the first president in my lifetime who genuinely stood up to the Chinese Communist Party, and that caught their attention," he concluded.
