Pashinyan Discusses Holding Snap Elections in June

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is discussing the issue of holding snap parliamentary elections in June. Specific dates are even being mentioned—June 6 or June 20, both Sundays.

The relevant authorities have been tasked with evaluating which day would be feasible. However, he is also trying to reach an agreement with the opposition, particularly the parliamentary forces, to ensure that no new candidate for Prime Minister is proposed after his resignation. The opposition in the National Assembly is resisting this.

There is a possibility that if an agreement is not reached, Pashinyan may abandon his intentions. This is especially pertinent as authorities have recently circulated the thought of acquiring the Venice Commission's opinion regarding a new Electoral Code, with the idea of organizing elections at least six months after that. The next session of the Venice Commission, where the Electoral Code of Armenia could be discussed, is set for March, and the draft will enter the Parliament in April.
