The Term of the START Treaty Between Russia and the USA Extended by 5 Years

The START III treaty between Russia and the USA came into force on February 5, 2011. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has signed a law extending the Strategic Offensive Arms (START) reduction treaty by 5 years. This was reported by the Kremlin's press service.

"The President has signed a federal law on the extension of the treaty on measures for the reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms between the Russian Federation and the United States of America, signed on April 8, 2010," the statement said.

It was noted that the federal law was passed by the State Duma on January 27, 2021, and approved by the Federation Council on the same day. Let us recall that the presidents of Russia and the USA, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, agreed to extend the term of the treaty signed in May 2010 and entered into force on February 5, 2011 until 2026.

According to the treaty, each party is required to reduce its nuclear arsenal so that seven years later, the total number of intercontinental, submarine, and heavy bomber ballistic missiles does not exceed 700, and the number of warheads does not exceed 1,550, with 800 deployed and non-deployed launchers.
