The Government Intends to Appoint the Director of ‘Public’ Hovhannes Movsesyan as the Chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees
Today, the Board of Trustees of Yerevan State University will hold a meeting, where the election of the council's chairman is on the agenda. It should be reminded that in early December, the chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees, Gevorg Muradyan, resigned. Two explanations are given for his resignation: one is related to the protests against the Artsakh war and defeat, and the other is that the court ruled he was not entitled to be elected as the chairman of the Board of Trustees, prompting him to resign ahead of the enforcement of the decision.
By the Prime Minister's decision, the former head of Tigran Avinyan’s office, Varag Siseryan, who also resigned, was replaced in the Board of Trustees by a new leader, Bagrat Badalyan. Vahan Papikyan, the head of the government staff, was replaced by Gohar Mamikonyan, advisor to the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, while former Public Director Armen Sargsyan was swapped with the new director Hovhannes Movsesyan. Gevorg Muradyan was replaced by Avetik Kerobyan, head of the IT department of the Armenian Stock Exchange, who is the brother of the Minister of Economy Vahan Kerobyan and the owner of menu.am.
Thus, the Board of Trustees of YSU has been replenished, but they still need to elect a chairman and then a rector for YSU. There have been rumors that the government intends to appoint Hovhannes Movsesyan as the chairman of the Board of Trustees, but university staff are opposed to this, and the government is currently betting on Avetik Kerobyan, whereas the university community prefers to elect a chairman from among themselves, expressing fatigue of external candidates who have no connection to the university.
