Five Arrested on Suspicion of Attempting to Seize the Government Building of Armenia

The Investigative Committee of Armenia is conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding an attempt to seize the government building in Yerevan. This was reported by the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

“On January 28, 2021, around 17:00, during a pre-announced rally at Republic Square in Yerevan, a group of individuals made a coordinated attempt to seize the government building. Following the incident, a criminal case was initiated in the Heavy Crimes Investigation Division of the Yerevan Investigative Committee based on Article 34-219 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (attempt to seize buildings, structures, means of transport, communication, or connection), under the characteristics of the first point of the second part,” the statement reads.

“During the preliminary investigation, five individuals have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to seize the government building. The inquiry is ongoing,” the report adds.

Note: A person suspected of or charged with a crime is considered innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the procedures established by the Criminal Procedure Code of Armenia, by a legally enforceable court decision.
