Members of the House of Lords in Great Britain Issue Statements in Support of Artsakh

Days ago, oral questions were raised in the House of Lords of Great Britain regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, where the lords voiced their support for Artsakh, opposing the genocide perpetrated by Azerbaijan, the destruction of cultural objects, military crimes, and violence against prisoners of war, among others. This was reported by Tert.am, citing a statement from the British Armenian Committee.

First and foremost, Baroness Caroline Cox, a great friend of the Armenian people, spoke in support of Artsakh. “Are you aware that despite the ceasefire regime, there are still reports of atrocities committed by Azerbaijani forces against Armenian military and civilian captives? During and after my visit, I have seen videos and photographs of mutilations, torture, and killings; there are beheadings of Armenians taking place. I have heard how Azerbaijanis are taking phones from captives, filming their torture and killings, and sending the footage to their families. Will the Government act decisively to ensure that Azerbaijan is held accountable for the documented crimes, or will they be allowed to continue with impunity?” she expressed her concerns.

Baroness Eaton also raised the issue of the genocide of the people of Artsakh. “According to 'The 10 Stages of Genocide' published by Genocide Watch in November, Azerbaijan has already reached stage 9, which is extermination, and stage 10, which is denial. What steps will the Government take to fulfill its responsibility to protect and care for the victims of Azerbaijan's genocidal policy in the last war?” she questioned.

The Lord Bishop of Coventry also addressed the issue of cultural heritage in Artsakh. “As already mentioned, thousands of Armenian monuments and cultural heritage sites are now under Azerbaijani control, including ancient churches, monasteries, and monumental buildings. There is evidence that Azerbaijan has already begun to deny the Armenian heritage of these sites. What steps is the Government taking to support UNESCO in the cataloging of the most significant cultural monuments, and have negotiations been held with Azerbaijan regarding its obligations under the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict?” the cleric emphasized.
