Revealed Cases of Burglary in Yerevan

The investigation into residential burglary, attempted theft, and aiding thefts in Yerevan has been completed by the investigation department of the Avan and Nor Nork administrative districts of the RA Investigative Committee.

This was reported by the information and public relations department of the Investigative Committee.

“As a result of investigative and other procedural actions, it was established that the incidents of theft and attempts of theft occurred between May and September 2020. Criminal cases were initiated regarding these incidents, which, upon the decision of the investigating body, were subsequently consolidated into one proceeding, due to the factual circumstances and the necessity to ensure a comprehensive, complete, and objective investigation.

It was revealed and substantiated that a 34-year-old resident of Yerevan, having reached prior agreement with his friend, planned and attempted to carry out the secret appropriation of someone else's property. For this purpose, on May 7, 2020, they traveled by car to the Duryan neighborhood of the Avan administrative district, where using technical means they had previously obtained, the 34-year-old man attempted to enter one of the apartments in the neighborhood. However, unable to unlock the entrance door, he, for reasons beyond his control, failed to complete the crime and left the scene. During this time, his friend was waiting at the entrance of the building, monitoring the area and eliminating obstacles.

On the same day, intending to commit theft, they went to another building in the same neighborhood and using the technical means they had previously obtained, opened the lock of one of the apartment doors, illegally entered inside, and secretly stole gold and silver jewelry and a television, causing significant property damage to the owner.

Additionally, on September 25, 2020, around 11:00 PM, the 34-year-old man traveled by a randomly hired taxi to the 4th district of Nor Nork in Yerevan, where he used technical means to open the balcony window of one of the apartments, illegally entered inside, rummaged through the belongings present in the apartment; however, for reasons beyond his control, he failed to complete the crime as he was caught by police officers on the scene.

During the investigation, it became clear that the 34-year-old man had been arrested on May 9, 2020, on suspicion of theft, and the court subsequently did not extend his detention which had been chosen as a preventive measure. After being released from detention, he continued his criminal activities, violating the restrictions imposed on him.

Evidence was also obtained during the investigation that the other defendant in the criminal case, the friend of the 34-year-old man, had been a defendant in another criminal case concerning theft, which was examined in court, and he had been released due to amnesty. However, following an appeal, his punishment was modified, and a harsher sentence was imposed on him. As he had evaded serving the sentence, a wanted notice was issued; however, he was later found and arrested in connection with the aforementioned criminal case.

Based on a sufficient combination of evidence, charges have been brought against the 34-year-old man under Article 34-177 (attempted theft) part 3, clause 1.1 (2 episodes) of the RA Criminal Code and Article 177 (theft) part 3, clause 1.1, while his friend is charged under Article 38-34-177 (aiding attempted theft) part 3, clause 1.1 and Article 177 (theft) part 3, clause 1.1. The 34-year-old man has been chosen to be in custody as a preventive measure. The investigation has been completed, and the criminal case, along with the accusatory conclusion, has been sent to court,” the statement reads.
