Washington Under Enhanced Security Ahead of Biden's Inauguration on January 20

Washington is moving to enhanced security in preparation for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20. The city is gearing up to welcome thousands of additional National Guard members to help maintain order during the transition of power. This was announced by Acting Chief of the Washington Police Department, Robert Conti, according to the Voice of America.

More than 6,000 National Guard members have been activated in Washington and at the Capitol since supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Congress building on January 6. This year's precautionary measures include the closure of most streets around the Capitol, with only lawmakers, their staff, and security personnel permitted to enter restricted areas.

This week, the National Park Service announced that the Washington Monument will be closed to visitors until the inauguration is completed. Other areas of the national park will also be closed in the coming days.
