Turkey Faces Severe Drought: Istanbul Has About 45 Days of Water Left, The Guardian Reports
Turkey's major cities are facing water shortages in the coming months, with Istanbul having approximately 45 days of water left, according to The Guardian.
The lack of rainfall has led to the most severe drought in the country in the last decade, and the megacity with a population of 17 million is experiencing a significant water crisis. Ankara's mayor, Mansur Yavaş, stated earlier this month that the capital has enough reserves in dams and reservoirs for another 110 days.
Izmir and Bursa, the next two largest cities in Turkey, are also facing similar problems, with their reservoirs filled at around 36 percent and 24 percent, respectively. Farmers engaged in wheat production in Konya and Edirne, close to the borders with Greece and Bulgaria, are warning of crop losses.
