Abovyan Underground Gas Storage Holds Maximum Volume of Natural Gas
The Abovyan underground gas storage facility (UGSF) currently holds the maximum volume of natural gas, which aligns with the existing technical capabilities of the UGSF. The accumulated natural gas is utilized to ensure uninterrupted and reliable supply to the consumer market, as well as to regulate consumption demands.
During the winter period, daily consumption volumes of natural gas reach 12–13 million cubic meters, whereas the technical capacity for gas withdrawal from the UGSF is a maximum of 6.0 million cubic meters per day. Consequently, when the delivery of natural gas to the country was halted due to emergency repair work on the “Karmir Kamurj–Sevkar–Berd” main gas pipeline, Gazprom Armenia had to implement supply restrictions.
By temporarily interrupting the gas supply to gas stations and the Yerevan thermal power plant, which have respective daily consumption of about 1.3 and 1.0 million cubic meters, Gazprom Armenia ensures gas supply to the population and other consumers in the current situation. Overall, previous interruptions in gas supply were planned, and recovery work was primarily conducted during the summer months when the amounts of natural gas retrieved from the Abovyan UGSF met the daily demand of the consumer market, averaging a volume of 5–6 million cubic meters.
