Whom Did Vazgen Sargsyan Meet Immediately Before Being Assassinated on October 27? Vardan Balayan Provides Details

Political analyst Vardan Balayan wrote on his Facebook page: "Meghri will explode one day right in the center of Yerevan / part 2 This myth has been formed over the years through the efforts of certain media that Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan's visit to the USA was unprecedented, with the meeting with Vice President Albert Gore presented as evidence.

The fact is that the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia who was received by the same Vice President was not Vazgen Sargsyan, but attention, Prime Minister Armen Sargsyan.

Some details of the current president's American visit are important for understanding what happened on October 27, 1999, and what is happening now. Armen Sargsyan, appointed by Levon Ter-Petrosyan as prime minister, was indeed received with great honor in the USA. The Prime Minister of Armenia was hosted at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) at the invitation of former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, and a meeting took place with Vice President Gore, during which Vice President Gore asked everyone to leave the room and leave him alone with Armen Sargsyan. A few minutes later, President Bill Clinton entered the room and took the Prime Minister of Armenia with him to the Oval Office, where they had a prolonged private conversation.

We will return to Armen Sargsyan soon; for now, simply reminder him that he was the one who prepared, conducted, and perhaps even organized Vazgen Sargsyan's meeting with Vice President Gore. In any case, to understand the main theme of that visit, it is worth mentioning several important events: Vazgen Sargsyan's August visit to Meghri, the military parade in Yerevan on September 21, the first Armenia-Diaspora forum in Yerevan, the meeting between Presidents Aliyev and Kocharian at the border with Nakhchivan, the Speaker of Parliament Karen Demirchyan's visit to Moscow in early October, meetings with Prime Minister Putin and other high-ranking Russian officials. By the way, the next visit was scheduled for October 28, and just before his assassination, on October 27, Prime Minister Sargsyan met with the newly arrived US Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott in Yerevan.

In November, a document scheduled at the OSCE Istanbul Summit did not register a breakthrough on the Karabakh issue due to the murders that took place in the National Assembly in Yerevan on October 27. A notable observation I will present is from David Harutyunyan, the Minister of Justice who found himself held hostage during the events of the 27th, stating that "there was an impression that the terrorists considered their actions a small revolution."

The continuation will follow, where we will talk about another small revolution that took place in 2018. But before that, let us note that underlying the events of October 27, 1999 was the struggle of geopolitical centers, which gave birth, in the words of David Harutyunyan, to Nairi Hunanyan’s small revolution. To be continued...
