Mikhail Gorbachev Discusses the Resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict

The former President of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, expressed hope that Russia can assist in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, emphasizing the primary role of Armenia and Azerbaijan. He stated that a solution must be found based on the interests of both sides, 'without winners and losers.'

'As for Nagorno-Karabakh... it is a very difficult issue, rooted in the past. When it escalated, we tried to help find a solution for both republics, both peoples. And then Russia was trying as well,' Gorbachev said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Notably, he led the country during the escalation of the conflict in the late 1980s. The former Soviet leader is confident that now, when military actions have ceased, it is crucial not to stand still and allow the problem to remain unresolved for decades.

'I hope that Russia can help, but the main role belongs to the conflicting parties. Armenia and Azerbaijan are committed to negotiating the resolution. The decision must stem from the interests of both sides, without winners and losers,' Gorbachev emphasized.
