Meeting in Moscow Brings Hostile Countries Closer to Realizing Their Dreams: V. Voskanyan
The provision of a corridor connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan, which will pass through the territory of the Republic of Armenia, poses a serious danger to our state, a realization that Turkey has dreamed of for over a century. This is part of the pan-Turkism project, which has so far remained at an illusory level, aiming to create a land route through the Caspian region and eventually Central Asia. For decades, Azerbaijan has also dreamed of seizing this territory. Now, the upcoming meeting in Moscow seems to have brought the hostile countries closer to realizing their dreams, said Iranian expert Vardan Voskanyan in an interview with “Factinfo,” discussing the January 11 meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev in Moscow.
According to him, the issue lies in the fact that, apart from Azerbaijan and Turkey, there are also interests of other states in the region, including great powers. This refers to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation.
Voskanyan noted that Iran is, to say the least, not enthusiastic about such regional rearrangements, considering both its own national interests and the Armenia-Iran relations. “As a result of all this, we may lose the entire land border connecting us with Iran. This would simply be a geopolitical disaster for both Iran and Armenia. Moreover, as a result of this, Armenia could become a state governed by Ankara and Baku. As we know, the ground border between Azerbaijan and Turkey currently passes through Iranian territory. If the Azerbaijan-Nakhchivan corridor begins to operate in Armenia, then in this situation, Iran will lose its advantage over Azerbaijan and, consequently, lose leverage in the South Caucasus and will not gain transit profits from Turkey and Azerbaijan.”
Furthermore, in the face of such developments, Georgia would also lose significant portions of its monopoly on transit and its important role as a bridge between Turkey and Azerbaijan. Therefore, it is not ruled out that through this, Russia will be able to increase its influence even in Georgia. Russia perceives the South Caucasus not as separate entities but as a whole and seeks to secure its interests across the region.
Commenting on the January 11 meeting in Moscow, the Iranian expert expressed perplexity regarding how such a crucial issue can be negotiated internationally without taking into account the public's opinion or considering it in secret, behind people's backs. “The absurdity lies in the fact that we do not even know for sure if such a meeting will take place in Moscow, not to mention the questions to be discussed during that meeting, the issues to be raised, the contracts to be signed, and their potential irreversible consequences. It is clear that this extraordinary secrecy will have irreversible effects for the Armenian side, just as it did on November 10… As a result of strange agreements, Nikol Pashinyan is entering into extremely dangerous and secretive deals with our enemies, putting the state’s security at risk from all angles. This is our tragic reality and, as a result of all this, we are already hearing from the mouth of a senior official, an advisor to the President of genocidal Turkey, that the provision of the so-called Azerbaijan-Nakhchivan corridor will be a very important event for Turkey…,” Voskanyan concluded in the interview.
