Third Wave of Coronavirus Expected in Late January, Says Arsen Torosyan
The most challenging period for acute respiratory infections is winter, but unlike some countries experiencing significant outbreaks of coronavirus, the situation in Armenia is relatively mild. Our hospital capacity is currently under less strain, but we are preparing for a potential third wave of the pandemic.
According to Health Minister Arsen Torosyan, an increase in the number of coronavirus cases may occur in the second half of January, likely related to increased social interactions during the New Year holidays. However, he noted that the number of infected individuals will not exceed the figures recorded during the second wave of the disease.
During an interview with First News, the minister explained that during the second wave, which coincided with the days of war, it was impossible to adhere strictly to anti-epidemic rules, leading to high rates of infection. Many people have already contracted the virus and recovered. Torosyan emphasized that according to recent data, COVID-19 is receding in Armenia.
Commenting on the panic caused by the spread of a new variant of the coronavirus in various countries, the minister stated that this mutation emerged in September and spreads more rapidly. However, there is no data on whether it leads to more severe cases: “We have decided to wait for clarification on this matter.”
According to Arsen Torosyan, vaccinations and the development of collective immunity are expected to make COVID-19 a seasonal infection, with peaks occurring only in winter and none in summer, allowing us to treat it as a regular seasonal disease. He expressed hope that the vaccine would contribute to this outcome and mentioned that he has already been vaccinated.
“There is competition in terms of vaccines. We have always favored a collaborative approach, and we have joined a platform and made preliminary purchases that will arrive in Armenia in April-May. Simultaneously, negotiations are ongoing, and the most accessible vaccine for us in terms of speed is the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. We will purchase 1,000 doses, with healthcare workers being vaccinated first,” the minister added.
He advised caution regarding food and alcohol consumption during the holiday festivities to prevent overwhelming hospitals and minimize social interactions in light of the pandemic situation.
