Images of One of the Most Endangered Bird Species: The Bearded Vulture

The Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier, Gypaetus barbatus) is considered one of the most endangered bird species in Europe, as its population and breeding range have drastically decreased over the last century. This species is predominantly found in Ethiopia, where it is estimated to breed around 1400-2200 individuals. In the early 20th century, the species nearly vanished from Europe, with the Pyrenees serving as its lone remaining habitat. However, efforts have since been made to reintroduce Bearded Vultures to the Alps and even France.

Alongside the development of human infrastructure, many predatory bird species have experienced a decline in population largely due to habitat destruction. This species, already considered rare on a global scale, is also listed in the Red Book of Animals of Armenia, categorized as scarce and endangered. According to the Red Book data, the population consists of 8-10 breeding pairs, although stabilization of numbers has been observed in recent years.

The NGO "AraVes," which specializes in avian research, continuously studies the lifestyle of breeding Bearded Vultures in the Caucasian biodiversity region (CWR). These birds are also under the protection of CWR forest guards. According to the Ministry of Education of Armenia, the Bearded Vulture's population is affected by the use of pesticides in agriculture and forestry, illegal hunting, trapping, and the reduction of food resources.

The Bearded Vulture usually breeds in rocky areas of high mountains, preferring deep rocky gorges typically at elevations of 800-2000 meters above sea level. They lay eggs from early January to mid-February, usually producing one egg per year. Their diet mainly consists of animal carcasses, primarily small to medium-sized animals, and occasionally large ungulates.

The Caucasian Biodiversity Sanctuary is a privately protected area where hunting and any form of natural exploitation are prohibited. The sanctuary is managed by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC).
