On December 28, a tragic car accident occurred in Syunik Province. At around 20:45, a Mitsubishi Montero vehicle veered off the road and fell approximately 400 meters into a gorge on the Yerevan-Meghri highway, near the 253 km mark of the Goris-Kapan road. The vehicle ended up in the Vararakn River under still unclear circumstances.
According to photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, due to the difficult terrain, rescue workers, medical personnel, police, and investigators from the Syunik regional investigative department of the Armenian Investigative Committee were unable to reach the vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate that there are bodies inside the vehicle, and their identities are being established by the police and investigative unit.
The senior investigator Hamlet Sirekyan from the 2nd Police Company’s 6th Battalion has also arrived at the scene. However, the Military Police will conduct an investigation into the incident because there are reports indicating that some of the deceased are servicemen of the Armenian Ministry of Defense.
Officials from the Military Police department of Goris have also arrived. According to G. Shamshyan, they are peacekeeping troops. There are also reports that in addition to two deceased individuals, there may be others. The police and investigative department are working to identify the driver and the deceased.
