Returnees from Azerbaijan, Including Women, Have Endured Inhuman Treatment: Artak Beglaryan
Witnesses among the returnees from Azerbaijan report that both men and women have been subjected to inhuman treatment in Azerbaijani prisons as well as during captivity by the armed forces. This was announced at a press conference by Artsakh Ombudsman Artak Beglaryan.
The allegations concern both physical and psychological violence. Beglaryan stated that a significant number of the detainees continue to suffer from the effects of the abuse. “Since the vast majority are in Yerevan, in hospitals, our staff has not yet met with them. However, we are cooperating with the RA Ombudsman. Some have already met with them. We are also working with other bodies. I can’t specify an exact number, but if not all, then the overwhelming majority have been subjected to physical violence. I am confident that all of them have endured psychological abuse. These crimes will be documented both by us and by individual lawyers. Appropriate claims will be submitted to international courts,” he said.
