Sections of Security Zone Occupied Until November 9 Will Be Freed in Kapan, Gevorg Parsonyann
The head of the Kapan community in Syunik, Gevorg Paroyan, reported to Armenpress that positions must be freed by December 18 at 5:00 PM.
"We are talking about areas that we occupied until November 9 for the security of the safety zone. This has been communicated to us by the military. This is a very sad reality, and we are reiterating our concerns regarding security. Essentially, certain sections of the roads leading to villages from Kapan fall into enemy territory," said the community leader.
He also noted that it is proposed to assign Russian border guards to ensure security. According to Gevorg Paroyan, there are communities that practically have no alternative routes, making the need for them critically important.
"Kapan faces a serious security problem, as I mentioned, regarding the issue of roads. Additionally, the border area is located about 1 km from Kapan residential areas, about 200 meters from the airport, which raises significant security concerns. There will be issues with investment, and I cannot even think about tourism," added the community leader.
Today, residents of Kapan and Qajaran have closed the M2 highway in protest related to these issues. Gevorg Paroyan stated that it remains closed for now. The newly appointed governor of Syunik, Melikset Poghosyan, met with the residents and listened to their concerns.
On the morning of December 17, the Minister of Defense of Armenia, Vagharshak Harutyunyan, visited Syunik to become acquainted with fortification works in border areas with Azerbaijan and to monitor the process of carrying out combat duty. Gevorg Paroyan stated that the minister did not visit Kapan, and no meeting took place.
