President Armen Sarkissian's Message

President of the Republic of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, has sent a message in connection with the anniversary of the 1988 earthquake.

“Dear residents of Gyumri, Spitak, Vanadzor, Stepanavan, and fellow countrymen,

Today is the day of remembrance for the victims of the 1988 earthquake. 32 years ago, we lost thousands of our compatriots to this devastating earthquake, and this year we commemorate their memory with yet another sorrow in our hearts. Due to the war unleashed by Azerbaijan and Turkey against Artsakh, we have significant human losses, and we have also lost part of the territory of Artsakh. As a result, the country is facing a multifaceted crisis, ranging from moral and psychological to healthcare and socio-economic.

Once again, I express my condolences and support to the families and relatives of the victims, and I wish a swift recovery to the wounded. Even in this situation, we have no right to despair. We must do everything possible to heal the wounds of the earthquake and direct more efforts towards the restoration and development of our cities and villages.

In addition to the consequences and pain caused by the earthquake and today’s war, our country is facing a state of political unrest. Here too, we do not have the right to despair and succumb to emotions. Our salvation lies in national consensus and unity. It is undoubtedly thanks to this that we were able to rise from the ruins of the 1988 earthquake, and we are obliged to come together to overcome the current situation.

In memory of our heroes who sacrificed their lives in the recent war, and for our compatriots who perished in the 1988 earthquake. I bow before the memory of all of them, wish health, resilience, and steadfastness to their families and all of you, and peace and prosperity to our country.”
