The Government Cannot Operate in the Spirit of Public Sentiments of 2018, Says Armenian President

The President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, has issued a call today. “Today, our country, as a state, and our society are all together in a deep post-war crisis. This must be stated without formalities, without deceiving ourselves, and simultaneously without despair. We must fully recognize and accept the existence of this crisis and do everything possible to overcome it. Together, hand in hand:

Regardless of the positions we hold, our political beliefs and views, personal likes and dislikes, we must think about the future of our state, country, and people. Each of us has the right to express our opinion, dissatisfaction, and demand explanations from the authorities for the enormous human and territorial losses incurred as a result of the war.

The government cannot operate in the spirit of public sentiments of 2018. Today's reality is entirely different. In these tense and complicated days, I call on all of you—every action you take must be in accordance with the law, it must be legal.

I also appeal to representatives of law enforcement agencies—the maintenance of order and discipline is important. At the same time, remember that before you, on the streets of Yerevan, is our compatriot, one of us—whether a man or a woman, young or old. Among them are also people who defended their homeland just a few days ago, each one of you.

Any violence and the use of disproportionate force and means is unacceptable and intolerable. You must demonstrate responsibility, human and professional high qualities in your actions.

Today, we need pivotal decisions. The solutions must be within the framework of national consensus. We must be able to restore an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect, unite all positive and vital qualities of our people and transform them into a collective force that will guarantee our future successes. The activities of the President of the Republic and the presidential institution are directed precisely toward that goal. God bless us all,” said the President in his call.
