Residents of Kharamor village captured while returning from fields at night

Residents of Kharamor village in the Askeran region of Artsakh were released from captivity today through the efforts of Russian peacekeepers. They inadvertently crossed the border while returning from their fields, reports News.am.

“It was raining, and there was mud. The men are from our village, aged 52 and 47. They went to check if they could cultivate the fields or not. They went once at noon and once in the evening to see if the field had dried up, so they could arrange to take the tractor in the morning and cultivate it. It happened around 11 PM; they lost concentration on where to go and approached the border, where the Turks took them. After that, the Azerbaijanis called one of their phones and cursed at a female relative, who then called us, and we notified the relevant authorities. Following that, negotiations were held through the Russian military, and today they returned to Armenia,” said Zarik Abrahamyan, the mayor of Kharamor.

Kharamor has become a border community following the handover of villages in the Aghdam region to Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani position is only 500 meters away from the village. Although two weeks have passed, there has not yet been a clear demarcation of the border, with no positions drawn or guards present from Artsakh.

“The borders have not yet been set. The 2 km area in between is in disarray. If there was a border, perhaps there would be some concentration. The Azerbaijanis seem to be within our territory, with only a road separating us from them,” said the mayor, noting that there is fear among the villagers following the incident.
