Recent Manifestations of Offensive and Discriminatory Attitudes Towards Different Groups of Armenians on Social Media are Condemnable – Artsakh Ombudsman

Artsakh Ombudsman Artak Beglaryan wrote on his Facebook page: “The recent manifestations of offensive and discriminatory attitudes towards different groups of Armenians observed on social media in recent days are unreservedly and strictly condemnable. Although it is unpleasant for me to address these issues, I feel obliged to do so given their scale and intensity.

1. In general, and especially in this critical situation, the petty attempts to incite division and internal animosity among the Armenian people are neither suitable nor permissible for us. Ensuring a culture of human rights protection and internal unity is simply essential for effectively confronting our internal and external challenges.

2. Artsakh, as one of the main sources of dignity and security for the Armenian nation, has been under special care of Armenians for the last several decades. No one can deny or refute this, and we have always been grateful to each individual who has contributed in any way to the security and development of our Homeland (including Artsakh). The recent war was no exception, when we were all united under one goal in an atmosphere of mutual assistance; the mass altruistic support for displaced Artsakh residents and Artsakh in general is evidence of this.

3. Given the active role of fake users in the manifestations of division and animosity, it is clear that external and perhaps internal specific forces are interested in dividing the Armenian nation and fostering negative sentiments towards Artsakh. Unfortunately, many individuals, who have no intention of harming our vital internal solidarity and strength, fall into the trap of emotional manipulations that serve these interests. Therefore, this should be another reason for concerned individuals to be cautious about believing and participating in such artificial and criminal campaigns. The same applies to our compatriots residing in Artsakh.

4. Although individuals are largely guided by irrational motives in their actions, they also have the ability to apply rationality. Therefore, we are capable and obligated, especially in such cases, to refrain from being swayed by manipulations that exploit stereotypes and to avoid fueling processes that contradict our own values and principles. After rational conclusions, it is possible to understand the causes and consequences of specific phenomena and the dangers of artificial generalizations and attempts at division. Let us never forget the necessity of our internal solidarity and unified efforts, especially in times of crisis.”
