Police Officers' Use of Masks Stemmed from Security Considerations: Clarification from the Police
Ani Samsonyan, a member of the "Enlightened Armenia" faction in the National Assembly, has made a post on her Facebook page regarding the recent incident where masked police officers detained citizens participating in a protest. She addressed the Chief of Police with several questions:
- Could you specify which division of the Police these officers are from?
- Are they not obliged to comply with the regulations regarding the provision and wearing of uniform by members of the Police of the Republic of Armenia while performing their official duties?
- What justified the need for police to wear such uniforms to disperse peaceful protesters?
In response to the first question, it has been confirmed that the masked individuals, along with those wearing garments with foreign-language inscriptions, were members of the Police troops of the Republic of Armenia. They were compelled to use reserved garments and were unable to remove the foreign inscriptions in time.
In response to the third question regarding why the police were masked, it was stated that this was due to security considerations for police officers, a reasoning that seems rather vague and unconvincing. Samsonyan concluded that this practice should be excluded in the future.
