For Two Days, I’ve Been Waiting with a Grenade Launcher for a Tank to Come – Remembering the Fallen Sarkis Ghazaryan
Sarkis Movses Ghazaryan, who became a hero in Mataghis, would have turned 19 in three days. Born on December 3, 2001, in the town of Chambarak, he came from a military family. From a young age, he understood the seriousness of military life, as his father was a soldier who raised Sarkis in that spirit. He stood out during his school years for his balanced behavior and intelligence. Sarkis had always dreamed of a medical profession and spared no effort to achieve this goal.
Sarkis was accepted into Yerevan State Medical University for free. However, he decided he had to serve his homeland and joined the Armed Forces with the intention of continuing his studies afterwards. He was exceptionally kind and balanced in character, yet also decisive – a true Armenian boy. From childhood, he loved hunting and sports, although in recent years, he had little time to pursue his hobbies as he was focused on studying chemistry and biology. He affectionately referred to his friends as “jigyars” and often used the expression, “What’s up, my five?” He was a source of pride for his family and friends.
A close friend of Sarkis shared their conversations during the war: “It was during the war, and I hadn’t heard from him for over a week when Sako called me, cheerful and proud. He said, ‘Do you know the Haiko PC?’, and I replied yes, and he told me, ‘Just imagine what my brother did with that weapon – I took all the weapons from the post, it was just a cleanup operation!’ I asked him what was going on, and he said, ‘For two days, I’ve been waiting with a grenade launcher for a tank to come – it hasn’t come yet, but I will hit it when it does!’ I was so happy and told everyone out of joy. The last time we spoke, I had asked him to be careful as one of my friends had been killed. He promised he would be careful, but he died while trying to save his comrades…”.
Sarkis was set to turn 19 on December 3. His family decided to visit him with a cake.
