Russian Cultural Figures Urge UNESCO to Protect Artsakh's Cultural Heritage

Russian cultural figures, including conductors Vladimir Spivakov and Teodor Currentzis, musician Boris Grebenshchikov, and director Alexander Sokurov, are appealing to UNESCO to include the Christian cultural, artistic, and architectural monuments of Nagorno-Karabakh on the World Heritage List for their further preservation. This is reported by РИА Новости.

“We, as representatives of the international cultural community and public figures, are deeply concerned about the fate of the Christian cultural, artistic, and architectural heritage monuments in Nagorno-Karabakh, which are at risk and could be destroyed, damaged, or vandalized even after the end of military operations. We urge UNESCO to use its authority and powers to save the monuments by granting them the necessary status and including them on the UNESCO World Heritage List,” the open letter states.

Culture figures have expressed concern that the cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh may suffer the same tragic fate as that of Syria's Palmyra.
