Lavrov Comments on US State Department's Response to Russian Involvement in Nagorno-Karabakh Resolution

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov does not believe that the Nagorno-Karabakh issue has been resolved without the participation of the United States and France. According to Armenpress, Lavrov made this statement in an interview with an RT correspondent while commenting on the US State Department's response regarding Russian involvement in settling the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“First of all, I do not believe that the (Karabakh issue) was resolved without the participation of the United States, as, of course, the positions of the three co-chairs — Russia, the U.S., and France — which were presented several times in the last month preceding the signing of the document on November 9, at the level of presidents, ministers, and special representatives of the co-chairing countries, were in favor of an immediate cessation of hostilities and the development of a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire regime, and have politically and psychologically influenced the situation,” said Lavrov.

He stated that, despite the calls at that time lacking material substance, they played an important political role in creating conditions for the parties to ultimately reach an agreement through the efforts of the Russian president. “In a situation where every second counted, and each had its price in terms of human lives, would it have been appropriate to call Washington, Paris, and negotiate about whether they would support certain formulations ...?” noted Lavrov, expressing the view that such claims are simply wrong and unethical.
