United Kingdom Expresses Hope That Ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh Will Bring Parties Closer to Full Resolution

The United Kingdom has welcomed the agreement on a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh, expressing hope that it will bring the parties closer to a comprehensive negotiation resolution. According to a statement from the UK delegation at the OSCE Permanent Council,

"The United Kingdom welcomes the fact that the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to cease hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas. In the context of the rising number of civilian casualties and displaced persons, as well as the increase in COVID-19 cases, a ceasefire was urgently needed. These actions will prevent further human losses, and we hope they will bring the parties closer to a full negotiation resolution," the statement reads.

It is also noted that as hostilities ease and winter approaches, both sides are urged to prioritize the humanitarian situation, particularly focusing on the needs of women and children. It emphasizes that both the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Committee of the Red Cross must be granted full access and support to provide necessary assistance to civilians.

"We call on all parties to act responsibly and in good faith to facilitate the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid," the statement states.

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its support for the OSCE Minsk Group as the primary format through which a final resolution can be achieved. "The Madrid Principles provide a solid foundation for a lasting resolution to the conflict, and their frameworks are crucial for implementation. We urge all parties to closely cooperate with the co-chairs in support of their efforts," the statement concludes.
