Biden Nearly Ties Trump in Georgia, Says Fox News
The Democratic Party's presidential candidate Joe Biden has nearly tied with Donald Trump in the 'swing' state of Georgia, where the incumbent president was previously leading for a long time. This was reported by Fox News, as mentioned by Armenia's Armenpress.
According to their data, Biden currently holds 49.36% of the vote while Trump has 49.4%. The difference in their votes stands at 1,775.
Georgia, with its 16 electoral votes, is one of four states that could determine the outcome of the elections, but no winner has been declared there yet.
However, Trump’s campaign has filed a lawsuit in the state court demanding that the election commission adhere to the laws regarding the counting and preservation of mail-in ballots.
To win the election, a candidate must secure at least 270 electoral votes. As of the latest data, Biden has accumulated 264, while Trump has 214.
Besides Georgia, votes are still being counted in Pennsylvania (20 electoral votes), North Carolina (15 electoral votes), and Nevada (six electoral votes).
The delay in counting the votes is attributed to the fact that many voters have cast their ballots by mail due to the coronavirus pandemic, and those ballots are still arriving. In particular, Nevada has announced that they will accept those votes until November 10.
The U.S. presidential election is conducted on a two-tier system: in the first phase, voters in each state cast their ballots, and the winner receives all of that state’s electoral votes. There are a total of 538 electoral votes (equal to the number of members in Congress), and they subsequently elect the president. This year, voting is scheduled for December 14, reported RIA Novosti.
