Shelling in Nagorno-Karabakh Qualifies as War Crime, UN States

The shelling in Nagorno-Karabakh can be classified as a war crime, stated the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Michelle Bachelet emphasized in her announcement that the continued shelling in the conflict zone and its settlements violates international humanitarian law.

“Since September, we have seen horrendous consequences. I have repeatedly called on the parties to take all possible measures to avoid or at least minimize civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, to distinguish between peaceful residents and combatants, as well as civilian objects from military purposes. Instead, homes have been destroyed, streets have become rubble, and people have been forced to seek shelter in basements,” noted the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
