Lawyer Expects ECtHR to Facilitate Prisoner Exchange: Application Filed for 6 Armenian Prisoners
During the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh, an individual application regarding six prisoners of war has been submitted to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). The goal is to compel Azerbaijan to ensure the inviolability of the lives of prisoners of war, their right to health, and their connection with family members.
In an interview with Armenpress, lawyer Siranuhi Sahakyan stated, “The issue is to ensure the inviolability of the lives of prisoners of war and to provide immediate medical assistance, as some prisoners are wounded and may face life-threatening issues due to the lack of proper medical care. Additionally, it is essential to ensure contact with family members and the possibility of visiting representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross.”
The lawyer informed that currently, the cases of Areg Sargsyan, Narek Amirjanyan, and Samvel Asatryan have been taken under monitoring by the ECtHR, which has requested information from Azerbaijan regarding their health condition. As for Valera Hayrapetyan, Edik Tonoyan, and Albert Mikaelyan, they are still waiting for a response.
The lawyer noted that applications will also be submitted to the ECtHR in the near future, although those applications are still in the drafting phase. “There are cases that have video evidence, which allows us to organize the process much faster. However, there are also cases where, depending on the circumstances, we assert based on eyewitness testimonies that the person was taken captive. We are also carrying out additional verification actions for this purpose, and once those are confirmed, we will present them to the public,” Sahakyan concluded.
