Azerbaijan Could Face US Sanctions: American Expert Comments on Aliyev's Statement Regarding Arms Purchase from Iran

The United States has not lifted its sanctions on arms purchases and sales from Iran, and any country that buys or sells weapons to Iran will face these sanctions, according to American expert Suren Sarkisyan in an interview with Armenpress regarding Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's statement that Azerbaijan is purchasing weapons from Iran.

"Of course, the UN has lifted arms purchase and sales sanctions against Iran, but US sanctions against Iran are still in effect. Any country that buys or sells weapons to Iran will fall under US sanctions," Sarkisyan stated.

The expert finds it difficult to assess the accuracy of Aliyev's statement, but believes that Azerbaijan will have issues with several countries following this declaration. "It is clear that he is trying to create tension in Armenian-Iranian relations, which I am confident will not succeed. I believe we should expect responses from Iran, and possibly even Israel, regarding this matter in the near future. I also think this statement will create serious tension in the US, if not at the presidential level, then at the Congressional level," Sarkisyan added.
