U.S. House of Representatives Introduces Resolution to Expel Turkey from NATO

In a significant political move, Tulsi Gabbard, a former Republican candidate who was out of the running in the 2020 U.S. presidential elections, has called on the United States to work with allied nations to remove Turkey from NATO. As reported on the Facebook page of the Armenian National Committee of America, Gabbard's resolution explicitly details Turkey's assaults on Armenian forces and presents evidence of Ankara's continuing support for terrorists.
The resolution captures several key provisions that reflect Turkey's hostility and aggression towards Armenians. Specifically:
- Recognizing that Turkey has increased its involvement in the conflict between Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan, transitioning from merely providing political support to offering direct military assistance.
- Highlighting that Turkey maintains a closed border with Armenia, a country with friendly relations with the U.S., and has repeatedly posed threats to Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Armenian communities worldwide, occasionally alluding to the Armenian Genocide of the early 20th century.
- Noting reports that Turkey has sent Syrian militants to fight against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, many of whom have ties to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
- Considering evidence that Turkey has participated in or directly led Azerbaijan's military offensive actions against Nagorno-Karabakh, with F-16 fighter jets involved in attacks against both Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia.
- Pointing out that despite NATO's calls for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh in response to Azerbaijan's aggression, Turkey has acted against NATO's position by publicly supporting Azerbaijan's ongoing aggression.
- Despite Canada’s decision to halt the sale of military equipment and arms to Azerbaijan due to its direct involvement in offensive actions, Turkey expressed dissatisfaction with Canada's decision, citing its relations within NATO.
