Debate on the Selection of Constitutional Court Judges within 'My Step' - Hamazasp Danielyan
The change in the age threshold for voters is within the scope of the powers of the constitutional amendment commission, as that age is defined by the Constitution. Hamazasp Danielyan, a member of the 'My Step' faction, stated this during a conversation with journalists in the National Assembly today, addressing the question regarding amendments to the electoral code.
‘We are discussing all components that are not directly related to the functioning of the constitutional amendment commission. Therefore, we are talking about voter lists, campaigns, commissions, and the electoral system of the National Assembly,’ he said.
Regarding the amendments to the 'Law on Political Parties,' Danielyan assured that this package will be submitted for circulation this week, there will be public hearings, and it will be approved in the autumn session.
Danielyan also referred to reports suggesting there has been disagreement regarding the selection of Constitutional Court judges and that there was even talk of resigning his mandate. ‘‘My Step’ is the faction where debates always take place on all issues, including the selection of Constitutional Court judges, both at the principles level and regarding specific candidates. As for the resignation of my mandate, that is a fabrication of the media. I know very clearly under what circumstances I would be ready to step back from the commitment I have undertaken. That moment has not arrived yet,’ he stated.
When asked about his stance on the new judges of the Constitutional Court, the MP replied: ‘The important aspect here is that the indefinite postponement carried serious risks in Armenia. We need to consider the context, which is that the composition of the Constitutional Court should have been filled in accordance with the principles we discussed from the beginning of the process, meaning that the judges of the Constitutional Court must correspond to the model of the 2015 Constitution, and we could not postpone this issue indefinitely.’
