‘Zhamanak’: Penalties to be Toughened for Those Avoiding Military Service

‘Zhamanak’ newspaper reports that the Chairman of the National Assembly Defense and Security Committee Andranik Kocharyan, the Chairman of the Science, Education and Culture Committee Mkhtiar Hayrapetyan, and independent MP Arman Babajanyan have jointly proposed a legislative initiative to amend Article 327 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to avoiding conscription or alternative service.

Under current legislation, the penalty for such offenses includes detention for up to 2 months or imprisonment for a maximum of 3 years. The MPs propose to tighten this article and stipulate imprisonment for up to 6 years.
