Government Establishes Honorarium for 20 Title-Holding Athletes

By the proposal of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, amendments have been made to the Government's decision No. 925-N dated August 13, 2015. As a result, champions and award winners of the Olympic Games and the World Chess Olympiad who are citizens of the Republic of Armenia but do not permanently reside in Armenia will now receive monthly honorariums. The decision was made during the Government's meeting on September 10.

Previously, title-holding athletes who were citizens of the Republic of Armenia did not receive honorariums due to living outside of the country. In addition, an honorarium has been established for the winners of the team world championships; specifically, five athletes from the Republic of Armenia's chess team, who won the World Chess Championship, will receive an honorarium.

In total, 15 athletes who are citizens of the Republic of Armenia but live permanently abroad are included in the beneficiary list, along with five athletes from the team that became the World Chess Championship team champion. The decision by the Government emphasizes the importance of sports development and the achievements of title-holding athletes, irrespective of their residence status in the Republic, as they have represented Armenia under its flag and have upheld the honor of the Republic of Armenia and the former Soviet Union.

More information about the list of champions and award winners of the Olympic Games and World Chess Olympiad, as well as those who became champions in non-Olympic sports and the world championships in chess, can be found here.
