Araik Harutyunyan is a great human disappointment for me. Mikael Nahapetyan
My father has left his position as a lecturer at Yerevan State University (YSU) after around 24 years of academic and pedagogical activity at his own request. He was one of the first specialists who independently specialized in the field of Global Information Studies years ago and laid the groundwork for academic education in this specialization in Armenia. This was reported by Mikael Nahapetyan, a representative of the 'Citizen's Decision' party, on his Facebook page.
'The field of Global Information Studies is a highly lucrative area of employment, and thus the time dedicated to lecturing is purely a contribution to the development of this specialization—a dedication to a mission, to a dream. I find no need to say more about his biography, because anyone familiar with the field will give you the same answer when asked about the professional and moral qualities of Samvel Nahapetyan.'
'Now he has left his teaching mission at YSU, and I understand him. For years, in an environment of poorly funded science, a mismanaged university system, and a number of often dishonest and unjust, anti-cultural and anti-scientific manifestations, my father has always found a bright spot, some hope for a better future, and dedicated himself to preparing for that better day. When that day comes, there will be people who have gone through that school who will take on the responsibility of the field. Importantly, he has done this without ever holding any administrative position—neither before nor after.'
'That day was supposed to come in May 2018. However, education, science, and YSU not only did not undergo any reforms but in some cases, they further degraded, regressing further. And now, when there is no expectation of any good things in the coming years, it is pointless to continue wasting high-paid time for nothing. And here, the issue is not about individual university officials, not about students, not about finances... The issue is fundamentally systemic, ideological, and the direct and immediate responsible parties are the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Araik Harutyunyan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. These people have not only failed to bring any positive change to the academic environment but have further degraded it without any approach or any understanding of the question 'where are we going?'
'YSU has never had such murky prospects as it does today, and the field of education has never been in such an uncertain and directionless state as it is today. My father, like others, is not a politician, they will not come to the Ministry of Education with irrational arguments about 'traditions' demanding Araik Harutyunyan's resignation and become fodder for the mockery of half-educated and incompetent bureaucratic fools. They are scientists, intellectual workers who either have hopes tied to the current government or do not, and accordingly, the government either succeeds or fails.'
'In conclusion, I want to say that Araik Harutyunyan is a great human disappointment for me. I have never been so happy with the appointment of any other minister, but I will not be indifferent when any other minister departs. He will remain in the pages of history as nothing, as a person who came on the wave of reforms and showed zero results. He will walk the streets and receive total indifference. No one will remember or recognize him—just as no one remembers officials who worked for 2-3 months in the 90s. But now let them live their lives, pretend that they have not failed at all, that the critics are the former officials and their satellites, that life is developing dynamically, and they are heroically fighting and struggling against issues. Let them enjoy their salaries that are three times higher than those of the people prepared for great changes and their offices that are three times larger than theirs, having three times more unconditional supporters among those who agree with what they say. As for me, I will dismantle this policymaking system and gather something new from scratch. Because it is immoral to treat people's dreams cynically, and I will not engage in immorality.
P.S. I hope my father will approach his specific case within the context of the broader situation and formulate the question politically with this approach.
