The Allowable Catch from Lake Sevan Will Be 300 Tons

The government has approved proposals that address the issues raised by fishermen. This was stated by MP Taguhi Tovmasyan from the 'My Step' faction on her Facebook page.

“As I previously informed, following up on the issues and suggestions raised by fishermen in our region regarding industrial fishing, I sent an official letter to Armenian Minister of Environment Romanos Petrosyan, outlining the problems raised by the fishermen and suggesting reviewing the duration of contracts, allowing fishermen to enter from different locations, and reconsidering the net size that does not allow monitoring the weight of caught fish.

Thus, I present the approved amendments related to my proposals concerning the problems raised by fishermen, which were confirmed by the Armenian government's decisions N 1420-N and N 1421-L:

  • The allowable maximum catch (in tons) will now be 300 instead of 200.
  • The allowable weight for fishing per unit will be no less than 400 grams, replacing the previous 500 grams.
  • Catch of the 'Sig' fish species will be carried out throughout the entire area of Lake Sevan, at least 500 meters away from the shore, instead of the former Great Sevan.
  • Eight more areas will be added to the previously approved 17. A total of 25 areas will be regulated by the 'Sevan' national park in the entire basin of Lake Sevan.
  • The period for contracts regarding the use of biological resources in Lake Sevan has been set from March 15, 2020, to December 1, 2020, replacing the previous date of October 1.

Thank you to the government for accommodating the fishermen of Gegharkunik region,” the MP wrote.
