79 Containers of Hazardous Chemical Substances Discovered at Beirut Port

The Lebanese military, in collaboration with French counterparts, has discovered 79 containers filled with toxic chemical substances at the Beirut port, according to a report by "RIA Novosti" citing the Lebanese army.

Between August 14 and August 22, officials located 25 containers of sulfuric acid and an additional 54 containers containing other substances, whose leakage could have disastrous consequences.

It is worth recalling that on August 4, a powerful explosion occurred at the port of Beirut. Hundreds of buildings and vehicles were destroyed or damaged, and windows shattered in many neighborhoods of the Lebanese capital, with some structures completely ruined. Authorities disclosed that the cause was the detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, which had been seized by customs back in 2014 and stored in a warehouse. Over 170 people lost their lives in the tragedy, and the capital was recognized as a disaster zone.

Subsequently, anti-government protests ensued in the city, leading to the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab and his entire cabinet.
