Lithuanian Prime Minister Meets with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya

Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has met with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, a former opposition candidate for the presidency of Belarus, as announced by the Prime Minister on his Facebook page.

In his post, the government leader emphasized once again that the Baltic Sea countries are ready to support democratic reforms in Belarus and expressed hope that Tikhanovskaya's children would soon be able to embrace their father, who remains in detention in Minsk.

Skvernelis noted that during his meeting with Tikhanovskaya, they discussed everything she had to endure during the electoral campaign. According to the Prime Minister, there is now a national awakening in Belarus, which Vilnius is fully supportive of. He added that the path to forming a free society will not be easy and will require steadfastness.

It is important to recall that Tikhanovskaya left Belarus on August 11 and traveled to Lithuania. She admitted having faced a dilemma and mentioned her children.

Protests and strikes continue in Belarus following the presidential elections held on August 9, where incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko claimed victory with 80 percent of the votes. Tikhanovskaya, who ranked second based on the election results, has recently announced her willingness to become the national leader during a transitional period until new elections are held.
