Candidate for Constitutional Court Judge Aligns with 'My Step' Faction: Ruling Coalition Previously Elected Him

There is a positive disposition towards Edgar Shatryan within the 'Civil Contract' party and the 'My Step' faction of the National Assembly, which is why he will be nominated as a candidate for the Constitutional Court judge, replacing a report from the 'Zhoghovurd' newspaper. The meeting scheduled for August 22 with him and the members of the ruling party aims to finally settle this matter, make a decision, and announce it.

It should be noted that the meeting with the ruling party was initially planned for tomorrow, August 21, but it was rescheduled to accommodate all parties involved.

The 'Zhoghovurd' newspaper learned that there is no official information yet regarding Shatryan's nomination, and discussions with him have remained quite preliminary. A final decision will be made after the meeting with the party board, which, according to preliminary information, will be attended by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, as it is the government that should nominate Shatryan.

The newspaper has learned that after the former candidate Vahram Avetisyan withdrew from the race, government members were searching for a considerable time, uncertain about whom to nominate for the position, especially since the former candidate was not favored by many members of the ruling faction. Ultimately, the nomination fell on Shatryan, who, notably, was a member of the Corruption Prevention Commission for a brief time and was the candidate of the ruling faction in that position, receiving 96 votes in favor and 6 against.

Furthermore, of the five candidates, he received the most votes in the elections held on November 19, 2019; this is why the government’s selection has focused on Shatryan, considering the previous voting results.

It is emphasized that Edgar Shatryan could only become a member of the Constitutional Court after August 18, as stipulated by Article 4 of the Law on the Constitutional Court: 'A judge of the Constitutional Court may be elected if they are a citizen of the Republic of Armenia who has reached the age of forty, possesses electoral rights, high professional and moral qualities, has at least fifteen years of professional experience, speaks Armenian, and holds a higher legal education.' It is also worth noting that August 18 was Edgar Shatryan’s birthday, marking his 40th birthday.
