Belarusian Opposition Calls on Authorities to Begin Negotiations

The Belarusian opposition coordination council has urged the authorities to immediately start negotiations. According to РИА Новости, this statement was made on Wednesday by Olga Kovalkova, a representative of opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in the presidential elections.

“The coordination council believes that the only way to overcome the political crisis is through immediate negotiations, as well as developing mechanisms for the restoration of legality and conducting new elections,” Kovalkova stated during a press conference.

Protests in Belarus have not ceased since the presidential elections held on August 9. Today, protest actions were conducted, where participants moved from the Ministry of Internal Affairs building towards the Government House. There, they continued their peaceful rally. It has been noted that law enforcement officials are not obstructing those gathered.

Supporters of the opposition continue to express their dissatisfaction with the results of the presidential elections, in which incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner with 80 percent of the votes, while Tikhanovskaya received 10 percent.
