European Union Calls Belarus Elections 'Not Free and Not Fair'

The European Union has labeled the presidential elections held in Belarus on August 9 as not free and not fair. This was stated in a message released by the office of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

The message specifically mentions: "EU foreign ministers have reiterated their call to the Belarusian authorities to cease the disproportionate and unacceptable violence against peaceful protesters. The EU expects the authorities to immediately release all those unlawfully detained in light of shocking reports regarding inhumane treatment and conditions of detention. The European Union anticipates a thorough and transparent investigation into all alleged abuses to hold those responsible accountable."

The ministers reaffirmed that the elections were neither free nor fair. The European Union considers the election results to be falsified and, therefore, does not recognize the results as presented by Belarus's Central Election Commission. For this reason, the EU will present a proposal to the Belarusian authorities to support dialogue between political powers, the opposition, and broader society in order to resolve the current crisis.

Ministers also agreed on the necessity to punish individuals responsible for violence, repression, and electoral fraud. Work will begin immediately on additional listings within the existing sanctions framework against Belarus.
