OMON Blocks Traffic on Independence Avenue in Minsk
The Belarusian OMON has blocked traffic on Independence Avenue in Minsk, near Gorky Park. According to РИА Новости, this move by the security forces has divided the opposition activists and their supporters who were walking along the avenue.
It has been reported that OMON officers have also gathered in the nearby square, and police yellow buses have been stationed there.
It is noteworthy that protests in Minsk began after the presidential elections held on August 9, during which dissatisfied citizens took to the streets to express their discontent with the results. The incumbent president, Alexander Lukashenko, was declared the winner of the elections.
