Gakharia Denies Reports of Restrictions at Kazbegi Checkpoint

“Reports circulating in various media about the government's intention to impose restrictions in Kazbegi are unfounded. As of today, the epidemiological situation at Kazbegi and the Upper Lars checkpoint is fully under control,” stated Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia during an inter-agency coordinating council meeting.

“In total, we have conducted 54,205 tests. As a result of mandatory testing, the coronavirus has been detected among 788 foreign and Georgian drivers transporting transit cargo. These cases were recorded earlier during the mandatory checks at the country's border checkpoints. While this number may seem small, any individual entering the country without supervision can lead to a serious escalation of the situation. This is an area we must monitor with great care and attention,” Gakharia emphasized during the meeting regarding the fight against the coronavirus infection.

According to the Ministry of Health, 101 of the infected drivers are currently undergoing treatment in Georgia.
