Opposition Supporters Begin Gathering in Minsk as Police Take Control of City Center

Supporters of the Belarusian opposition are gathering in various parts of Minsk. According to РИА Новости, Belarusian citizens are assembling in several districts, forming human chains in the streets. Many are reportedly bringing flowers in memory of a citizen who died during the protests.

Internal troops and police have also been deployed across different areas of the city, with security forces taking control of the area around the "Minsk – Hero City" monument, where massive clashes occurred between opposition supporters and law enforcement on August 9.

Earlier, military equipment was transported to the city center. The mass protests in Belarus began on August 9 following the presidential elections, where dissatisfied citizens and opposition supporters took to the streets to express their discontent. It is noteworthy that the incumbent president, Alexander Lukashenko, was declared the winner of the elections, having secured over 80% of the vote.
