Turkologist Karen Hovhannisyan has addressed the prevailing sentiments in Azerbaijani society regarding pro-Russian and pro-Turkish inclinations on his Facebook page. Hovhannisyan relays their stance with the following statement:
“The warming of Turkish-Azerbaijani relations is received ambivalently in Azerbaijan. Those opposing this warming mainly argue that Turkey could turn Azerbaijan into a second Syria, and Nakhichevan might simply be attached to Turkey. The thinkers in this way are mainly pro-Russian. Meanwhile, pro-Turkish advocates claim that relations with Turkey should be deepened in order to resist the 'Armenian-Russian occupation' because fighting alone will be impossible.”
