Aleksandr Lukashenko Makes First Statement After Presidential Elections

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has made his first statement following the presidential elections held yesterday. According to BELTA, Lukashenko commented on the election results during a visit to the Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation on August 10.

“There should be one politics, people,” he emphasized.

Lukashenko also promised to oversee the implementation of the investment programs of the Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation's high-tech agro-production.

Earlier, the united headquarters of opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya rejected the election results announced by the Central Election Commission. Official data indicates that the incumbent president, Aleksandr Lukashenko, won the elections, receiving 80.23% of the votes. Tikhanovskaya garnered 574,000 votes or 9.90% of voters.

The Central Election Commission noted that preliminary results are unlikely to change significantly.

The pre-election campaign in Belarus was marred by protests due to the arrest of opposition candidates and interference with their participation in the elections. After voting, protests were held in Minsk, accompanied by crackdowns from security forces.
